Driving in cold weather can be incredibly unsafe if you’re not prepared and if you don’t know how to drive in the sleet, snow and ice. Of course, if you know what you’re doing, you can ensure that you get home safely no matter the weather. Here are a few points to keep in mind when driving in the winter.

Brake, Turn and Accelerate Slowly

When you’re driving on a straight away, you can go ahead and drive the speed limit. On the other hand, when turning, accelerating, braking, slowing down, or doing anything except driving in a straight line, take it easy. You’re likely to slip and slide all over the frozen rode if you try to take turns and stop signs at the same speed as you do the rest of the year.

Pump Anti-Lock Brakes Slowly

And gently. If you begin to skid, let up on both the gas and on the brake, and shift into neutral. When the rear wheels are skidding, turn the wheel gently towards the direction you need to go. If the front wheels are skidding, do not try to turn, lest you lose control entirely.

Equip Your Car for Cold Weather

Making sure that all of your fluids are topped off will make a huge difference in safety. Getting some heated windshield wipers will also help. After all, if you can’t see the road, how can you drive safely? The right windshield wipers may save your life, especially if you combine some good heated wipers with some winter wiper fluid.

Keep Your Distance

If you keep a good distance between yourself and the car in front of you, you’ll be a lot safer on the road. The more time you have between cars, the more time you have to react, and the more time you have to get safely off the road or regain control after a skid.

Beyond the above listed tips, just make sure to keep your car prepared for the winter. A dirty car, a poorly maintained car, or a car in need of an oil change or fluid-refills isn’t going to be doing you any favors on snowy, frozen roads in the dead of winter.
